While the marketing chapter provides insights into domestic and overseas market potential, the chapter on production economics provides scenarios for high-cost production and low-cost production. The latter chapter demonstrates that waterchestnut production is commercially viable under a range of input and predicted yield scenarios.

When starting up production, particular attention should be turned towards the choice of good quality planting material which is those with comparably high sugar content at planting, the appropriate balance of N:P:K fertilizer and the timing of planting. These choices have important implications for the yield and quality of waterchestnut. With the manipulation of daylength through artificially lengthening with suspended bulbs or shortening through light exclusion, it is possible to supply freshly harvested produce for at least six months per year. As Economic Worries Hit Home, People Are ?Hitting The Bottle? In Growing Numbers Giving Rise To New Alcohol Treatment Programs, Such As Last Call

Walzel directly attributes the dramatic turnaround in the organization?s financial fortunes to BCA?s practice management system that enables CentroMed management to handle billing, accounts receivable, patient demographics, performance monitoring and collections.

?A huge benefit of the BCA system is that it doesn?t allow any claim to be dropped or lost,? he says. Walzel said that prior to inaugurating the BCA system patient fee receivables were averaging 74 days and there wasn?t any way to isolate open encounters. He said that within the last quarter aging has averaged 48 days. ?And we now track open encounters right back to the clerk and constantly track open visits and pressure providers to close them, thus increasing productivity and keeping claims flowing out the door.

?The BCA program uncovered weak areas that we were unaware of in our system enabling us to plug those gaps,? he says.

Another feature of the BCA system that CentroMed uses frequently is productivity tracking, which Walzel says accurately tracks visits per provider. ?Since we pay our providers bonuses based on production, accurate counts are important,? stresses Walzel. ?It?s also important that the report we run one month will generate the same number if we run it 60 days later. BCA is very consistent in their report generation.?

He also praised BCA?s knowledge of FQHCs. ?Their product is flexible enough to meet our changing practice needs and is strong enough to rapidly run reports necessary to effectively manage our practice,? he explains. We know we can call the BCA help desk and consistently get hold of someone we know and that knows us. If we?re running into a difficult issue, BCA puts their staff on a plane and flies them down here for however long we need them. This is the 5th Practice Management system that I?ve used in my 13 years with CentroMed and BCA is the only one I?ve run across that was able to back up every one of their sales claims with actual performance.
